Corpus Christi, TX Ring of Champions Recap
August 9th, 2008
What a great day!!! Even though we could not mix the populations for security reasons and had to do three programs, this was one great program. Even though it is summer and kids are out of school Judge Gonzales still sent us 45 kids and family members. Mario Barrera, one of our own ROC speakers, did a great job from the platform. Our own “Acts of God” street drama team rounded out the platform, along with the Primera Baptist praise band. Jasmine Chavera, who was incarcerated at the boot camp two years ago, came back to tell the kids that her mentor had changed her life. When Mario asked the teammates to circle up with the guests, everyone rushed into the crowd. I was so proud of our teammates. Everyone had four or five kids and parents around them hearing the good news. Most all of the young people and their parents trusted Jesus. We were not able to bring lunch into the unit this time. That worked out okay because the unit gave us extra “Share time” with the kids. Neta donated drinks and supplies for the teammates. It was a great example to the kids of “Christian Action.” Mario talked about being in a drive by shooting...After the program one of the kids came up and shared with Mario that he had been in a drive by and wanted out of the gang, but was afraid for himself and his family. After the program we took the young man to the victory house were he was accepted into their aftercare program. It was a great feeling to help someone break that bondage and give them hope for a better future. With God’s help he will complete the program and live a productive, safe life.
Peace and Grace,
